My french is proving to be better in some instances and worse in others.
Today I bought a swanky new pair of shoes, using only french (my only option at this store). I was proud of my self that I pulled it off. And the sales staff were very helpfull and kind (dispelling and rumours that the french are rude. I haven't found one yet).
However, I haven't been so lucky in all instances. Today I went to the local café/restaurant to have some déjeuner and I was off to a good start by asking the waiter, "Avez-vous une carte?" and a little "Je voudrais un café au lait s.v.p."
Yay pour moi!
Then I perused the menu (la carte) - and saw "Steak Tartar," a frech specialty which my friend Salima in Toronto told me is a must-have.
So, I ordered it. Then told the waiter that I would like it cooked "moyen" (medium).
There was much confusion that followed. So much in fact that he had to go fetch the bartender to translate for him. If you ever had steak tartar before, you'll know why. It's ground beef. raw, essentially. To my surprise. Fortunately, I have a forgiving palette and stomach. It was pretty good, but I don't think I'll have it again. The above photo is what the waiter wrote during our conversation. I found it funny. Tartar...scratch...cooked Tartar...scratch...and so forth...

Make certain that while you are in France to dine at a local favorite; "McDonalds". The good news is, the burgers will have none of that pesky beef stuff, just good ol' fashion filler.

Was the tartar hand-cut or machine ground? What wine did you have with it?

Sam will be in Milan by Saturday and talking a bus tour to the Alps before they head off to Dakar. Her packing skills unlike yours are organized and excellent. She followed your advice to a tee! She even took out two things and still had room for the mini-pillow I bought. I had to cut a queen sized sheet to make it into a hostel sheet and the remants became the covering for the little airline pillow! We're off to see Mary today as she made a bunch of Canada scarves for Sam to give away on Canada day!As well, I changed camera case and it's great and returned that weird smush of a fake amount of foam pillow. Sam's blog will be with the Winnipeg Free Press. She'll even get to write something for the paper! She also coloured her hair cinnamon.
Woops! ;)) Sorry Dale. I didn't think about elaborating on 'what' steak tartar really was!
On the bright side though, I can't stop cracking up. And you got to experience French food in its purest form! (At least I didn't tell you to try 'cervelle'!)

Sounds like your having quite the adventure. Mental note.... Salima told me a few things to try too, while I was in Africa and now I am convinced she has a stomach lined with cast iron or she can just eat every and anything. Whatever it is, it seems to keep her slim and trim. Hmmmmm....
